Kitchen Open Shelves

Hi Everyone.  Well the open shelves in the kitchen won and the bakery cabinet was remade into the cabinet above the refrigerator.  So it is all good!

I still have Terry's grandmothers bakery cabinet over the refrigerator for storage and now the open shelves keep the kitchen from feeling closed in.

Warning Lots of Pictures in this Post.  Get a frosty beverage!!!!

Before Picture of Kitchen

This is with the bakery Cabinet Before picture hanging where I felt open shelves might work better.

This is the bakery cabinet down and open shelves up.

The bakery cabinet looked nice with all my glassware but it just made this kitchen feel closed in.  I think it was just too much competition between the cabinet and the chippy window.  Plus it took up all my counter space to have the big shelf on the counter for my plates.

The open shelves are easier to get at my dishes and also give an open feel to this kitchen.

Pretty but took up too much counter space.  This shelf on the counter top was remade into a shelf for under the old chippy window which you will see a few pictures down.

Now I have more open counter space.

My good friend gave me this beautiful sign for my kitchen as a housewarming gift.

Fits in perfectly on the side of the new built in bakery cabinet over the refrigerator.

I still have my old chippy window hanging and there is the bottom shelf that was sitting on the counter.   Re loved  it under the window for a shelf.

Added a touch of color with my lavender candle and faux flowers. Even a girl that loves white needs a little color here and there!

Adding some more color to my milk and cream jugs.

Got this candle that is lemon sage at Home Goods.  Best smelling candle I have ever had.  It smells so fresh for your kitchen.  Lemon and sage make a great combo.  With the house closed up and air going on these hot summer days it is nice to have this fresh candle burning.  Smells like my kitchen opens to a garden of fresh sage and lemon trees.
Terry rebuilt the bakery cabinet over the refrigerator.  Now I have storage up there for things I do not use all the time like my cake platters.

I am sure I will be finding more stuff to be storing up in this cabinet.

I was able to keep my coffee bar area over on this side of the kitchen.

This is the door going to the garage from the kitchen.  I made a place to hang car and house keys along with my apron.

Glad I could use some of the old frames I moved along with us from the last house.  It framed out this plain door and the old knob gave me a place to hang up my apron.

So now this long and narrow kitchen feels lighter and brighter and more open.

Also........
Terry cut down my dining room table one more time!!! Yep that saw is getting a work out!   With this dining space being small and the china cabinet on the wall the table just felt too big for the space.  So he cut it down to a square table for 4.

He was able to keep the detail of the old drawer fronts on each side of the table.

This smaller table fits so much better in this dining space now.
There you have it.  The kitchen is done and I am liking the new open cabinets so much better.  Sometimes you just have to try things a few different ways until you get it feeling right.  I am just so excited that Terry has been able to repurpose almost all the pieces of salvage into new things in this kitchen.  Love that man and his tools!!!!!

I will have my master bedroom and master bathroom ready to show you soon.  Terry has repurposed some awesome pieces into these two rooms for me.  So stay tuned.

Have a wonderful week end.

Hugs,
Kris

PS:  So happy most of the decor changes are done now on the new house.  Opens up my time with these two precious angels and the furry angel too. Lovin summer!

Charlotte two weeks old and Abby 6 years old.

  2. Oh Kris!!! It is beautiful. I am glad the bakery cabinet got relived over the fridge. It is such a pretty piece, bit like you said, ate up too much valuable counter space. I recognize so many pieces from your old house. o me adding old pieces to s new home gives it soul. A feeling of hominess.
Douglas put the last of the trim last weekend and I painted them all up. But we have been running , running , running.
When did life get so busy?
Enjoy your sweet babies. All three 😋

  3. A beautiful kitchen...took a lot of cabinet space away but it sure looks more open and I know you have storage in other places. I have always loved shelves....not having a window in there and the natural color of cabinets made it look smaller an now...it looks so much lighter. Love it all...

  5. What a cute baby! And of course Cooper. I love it! Taking down the upper cabinets really opened up your kitchen. And I really love that you have white instead of stainless steel appliances.

  6. I honestly didn't think it could be any more beautiful than it was--I have trouble visualizing something--but this looks great. The open shelves do make a difference and I love the white dishes right there, ready to use. And white bowls, I have a weakness for white bowls! And a square table is wonderful for conversation while eating!

  11. Wow a transformation. I hadn't even noticed the sink was in the corner until you lightened the space up. It all looks terrific and yes I like the open shelves better than the bakery cabinet. I bet you are both worn out with all the work you've done. Are you tired of painting yet? Adorable babies and Cooper!

  12. that looks wonderful! I am a big fan of open shelves, but I need the cabinet space. So when I redo my kitchen I plan to just loose the doors and keep the cabinet framing. I love how your new space is all light and bright and airy!

  21. SUPER DUPER COOPER!!!!!! He is the picture of health, MY GOODNESS! And the new baby, already so big! Well, those two little ones are going to love Grandma's new digs!

KRIS...those open shelves are it. They totally transformed the place and I agree that sometimes in the midst of all the ethereal white, a pop of color is necessary. That lavender addition is perfect.

I WISH I could get my husband to let me white up the kitchen! GRRRR!

  22. Oh Kris, I love it so much*** It looks amazing. Love every detail in your gorgeous kitchen. I love that metal piece you have your dishes standing up in, where did you get that? And of course Cooper is just adorable. Enjoy this gorgeous weekend. Hope its not too hot there

  23. Yaaasss! This looks absolutely, 100% better, and I would've NEVER thought I'd say that when I saw the first look, Kris. Wow, what a difference open shelves made and making that space over the fridge your cabinet. I'm so happy you & Terry can work together to make results happen. You've done an amazing job.
Speaking of amazing, those grands are so adorable. Charlotte looks totally alert and engaged! Cooper is a good buddy, so handsome! I'm wondering what he thinks of this new little creature? Life is good, Kris!
    Happy Sunday.

  25. I knew you'd keep playing till you got it just right. It looks so much better. I liked it the other way, too, but it looks a lot bigger and more open this way. Terry, once again, did a great job. Can't believe he cut that table down again. John would be sawing me in half if I even asked him to cut anything down...and besides that we would be eating at a pile of lumber on the floor. He is NOT the most handy guy in the world....lol....thank God he is smart. lol

Great idea for the back door, too, and I am glad you were able to keep your coffee set up. Otherwise we would be meeting at Starbucks if I come to visit. I am so happy you finally got it just the way you want it-it is just perfect now.

Abby & Charlotte are just adorable. You can tell Abby loves her little sister...and I see Cooper stuck his handsome nose out for a photo, too. He is also adorable. Hope his health holds for a long time.

Have a wonderful, blessed Sunday- xo Diana

  26. Absolutely perfect! Nothing else to say except that Terry is a gem.

Oh, what am I talking about? Of course there's more to say! That Cooper! What a face!, I just want to reach into the screen and kiss that snout and make all those bad cells he has disappear and let him live a very, very long time. Such a sweetheart! And those grandchildren of yours! I can't even...

  31. Okay, I've tried to coax you to Racine to help me with some redecorating here to no avail. Can I coax you to send/lend Terry and his tools? You are one very lucky woman - a handy husband, excellent taste, two beautiful grandchildren, and Cooper. I could move into your place and not change a thing!

  32. Love the open shelving and the cabinet above the fridge. What adorable grandbabies you have...and being so close to them you can spend some much more time together. Cooper is quite adorable too...how's he doing? Where ever do you get all your chandeliers? I've been on a mission the last week looking for them and can't find any! So glad for the cooler weather and rain this morning...

  33. Love your kitchen redo Kris, it really looks great and the open shelving is such a good idea. Those babies are just precious, and Cooper looks great!

  34. I LOVE that the cabinet is off the wall and replaced with open shelves; also love that it has a much better 'star of the show' position above the frig. But....for my money I would remove that little 'bench-looking' shelf that sits on the counter next to the frig. It too is taking up valuable counter space and though the vignette you've created on it is lovely, there are so many other lovely vignettes around the kitchen, now that is looking a little competitive too....especially with the pretty vignette you have under the open shelves. But that's "my" idea....

I really love your white kitchen and dining room and the little touches of lavender...also a favorite soft accent color of mine in our white kitchen/dining room and LR. I'm really enjoying seeing your home's re-do.

  35. Your new shelves look great! I know you must be glad to have your house looking the way you had hoped. It's always so much work to get things in order after moving from another home. Your newest grandchild is such a cutie! Looks like this year is already proving to be better than last year.

  36. Wow, Kris. You continue to amaze me. I loved the cabinet but I am loving those open shelves even more - you definitely made the right choice. Love how you were still able to use the cabinet above the fridge too. I'm doing a small update to our kitchen, mainly painting the very dirty walls and of course I can't put things back the same as before so you have given me some wonderful inspiration. Adorable pictures of Abby and the baby (and Cooper)!
