Leap of Faith

Hi Everyone.  Oh how I have missed all of you.  Just thought I would pop in and share some news on what has been happening for us.

Monday was leap year.  Terry and I found a cute home that just went on the market so we took a "leap of faith" and decided to get off the job hunt roller coaster and buy a place near family and friends and begin to get settled.

This has been a long year with Terry searching out a new position as a fire chief .  He is  only 58 years old and wants to continue to work.  While Terry has had a great career for 34 years in the fire service  he just is not ready to let go yet.  He wants to work in the field he loves.

This past year's ride on the job hunt roller coaster with all the crazy around the fire service employment process's we decided to end the out of area hunt for a new position for Terry.   The fire chief positions have become about money, job cuts and politics and not so much about community service anymore.

The fire service is not the same as when Terry first started his career.  Like everything in life things change.

So on leap year day we took a look at this town home and the minute I walked in the door I felt like I was home.
Terry and I had a long talk and decided to let go of trying to find a job outside of Illinois away from family and friends.

We decided to put a bid in on this home and get settled and pray something in the area will then happen for employment for Terry.

This past month we have been staying with our daughter, SIL and granddaughter since we closed on our other home.  It has been so wonderful to be with family.  While I was so sad to let go my last home I am excited about starting my decor happy on a new nest soon.

We took a big leap of faith to chose family and friends at this point in our lives.  Being near my two daughters and granddaughter fills my heart.  I would have missed them so much if we had to re locate for a job.  With the new grand baby on the way  I want to be near my daughter to continue to help out with taking care of Abby and the new baby.

So while we still are in search of employment for Terry we feel blessed to be settling near our family and friends.

I put up some of the pictures of the new town home we chose.  These are from the listing so not the best pictures to do this place justice.  My camera is packed away in storage!!!!  So bear with these pictures.

It is an end unit town home so it is very quiet.  The homeowners association does not allow renters so it is all home owners.  The town homes are in a wonderful neighborhood with a mix of town homes and single family homes.  I can see a cute new front door in this home's future lol!  I will still be able to have my flowers to care for in the front and back of the town home but the nice part of town home living is the landscaping, cutting grass and snow removal is all taken care of for us.

The back area has a fairly large yard.  I will be putting out my lounge chair and lots of flowers this summer on the back deck area.

The main level has a good size living room and dining room.  I see crown molding, paint and new thicker base boards and casings around windows in this room.  It will give it a more cottage feel.  I can see my slipcovered furniture looking awesome in this room too.

I have big plans to transform this kitchen.  New butcher block counters taking down cabinets for open shelving and painting cabinets white with some awesome new hardware just for starters.  I see new 6 panel doors for this space too. My chandeliers through out this space with some neat architectural features should transform this kitchen into a lovely french cottage kitchen.

I see those upper cabinets coming down for open shelving and some cool architechtual things to be added.
The Master bedroom has lots of light that streams in the room.  The two bedrooms up stairs both have their own master bathroom suites.  Love that  my guest will have their own bathroom when they stay.  Some paint, crown molding and base boards and pretty window treatments along with my white and chippy pieces from my bedroom should transform this master bedroom into a nice sanctuary.

The best part about this town home is that it has a finished lower level.  This is going to be perfect for a family room and also a large office space for Terry and all his fire department antiques and collectables.  He will have his own man cave.

Yep even has a sink and full size refrigerator for him.  He won't even have to come up stairs to get a frosty beverage when watching his football and hockey games.

These are a few pictures from the MLS.  The pictures do not do this place justice.  I am just excited to be getting ready to move in and start to unleash my decor happy.  Hope to post as I begin the transformation of each of the rooms.  Hope you will enjoy coming along with me as I begin this journey to making this new nest ours.

We do not close until the 15th of April and then for the sellers to accept our contract  we had to let them have one month to stay in the home and rent back after we close.  They are hoping the will not need that time but incase they do to find a new home for themselves we agreed to do this.  So it may be a few months before I can unleash my decor happy.  Hoping they will find something quickly to buy.

Well I have missed all of you as this part of my life has been moving forward.  I have been visiting your blogs not alway leaving a comment but I have been keeping up on all of your news.  I hope to be back to blogging on the "New Junk Chic Cottage" transformations soon.

Wish us good luck that the home inspection goes well on Thursday and we will be officially under contract to purchase this home.

Have a wonderful rest of the week.  Hugs to all of you.
Kris

  30. Kris a leap of faith and a commitment of love to family. Staying close by family is a beautiful decision as you know how much I wish I still had family near. You and Terry will create and transform the townhouse into a beautiful nest as we in Blog Land will be oohing and ahhing along the way with you. You're moving at a perfect time to adorn the house in a growing season that will bloom with much love. Congrats my friend.

  31. I'm so happy for you! I'm glad that you've finally made some decisions based on your circumstances. I know how awful it must be to live in limbo. Now that you are staying close to family, do you regret selling your last house? I wondered about that. I'm sure you will enjoy the process of making this home your own. Guess what? My son is trying to get on with the police dept for the same county that my husband works for. He just passed his physical fitness test so he's on to the next phase. So, I may end up having a retired fireman husband and a police officer son. Guess my worrying will never end! His arthritis problems have greatly improved allowing him the opportunity to do something physical again! He promises to continue his education though. I made sure of that! So, time will tell for him. You know how long these processes take. I hope Terry will find something in the field that he loves. I wondered about fire investigation. Has he considered that?

  34. Oh, I can't tell you how much this lifted my spirits! I've been worried about you. I think you've made the absolute right decision for you and your family. You want to be near family. We do not know how much time we have on this earth, and so time away from family is time you can't get back. What is that old song: "Money can't buy me love?" Well, even if he found a fabulous job it could be far away from loved ones. I love the town home. I think it's great that you won't have the maintenance outside (same here) and can just sit back and enjoy it while you contemplate your decorating scheme. My heart feels lighter. Got my fingers crossed.

  37. Congrats Kris and Terry. It looks lovely----at times when my back aches from doing yardwork---I often remember our 8 years in a townhome, where yardwork was just what you 'wanted' to do and not what you 'had' to do. I'm sure you will make it your own. Best thing about a townhome is they are so well planned space wise. Hope to see you soon, Sandi

  42. It is soooo good to hear from you, Kris. I have been wondering how you both were doing. Being in limbo is not the greatest. |I don't think Terry will have time for a job with all the work you have planned for him lol
Just know, this is all for a reason. We may not see it for a long time, but some day you will see it was all for your good. We have lived in a townhome for 37 years and at this time in our lives would never want anything else. I love that we can turn the inside of out home into whatever we want, while not having to deal with too much outdoor work. I hope you will feel the same.

  51. Wow! What a big decision! I really like how your spouse can have his own finished space downstairs with a place for refreshment. That is a really neat feature, and makes the home so much larger, but it seems large even without the finished downstairs. The yard seems huge the way it is set up. I look forward to its transformation! It will be beautiful. xoxo Su

  56. Oh Kris, I will start with the man cave, luck you! A place of his own, no more messing up your white slips, and how about him here, he already has a cottage Start with white cabinets how did this happen, it needed to be the other way around, home with the darker stain grade cabinets from your kitchen, and his whites ones I'm place of the kitchen.

I am not surprised that a great home would come along and soothe your pain of giving up what you created in your home you left behind.
I just knew this would happen, and to have someone else do the hard work in your yard year around will be the best part of the move.
Cannot wait to see it all dressed up in your style, I know all your pieces will look like new pieces, different pieces in their new place setting.
A new door will place your stamp on this home, perhaps you can go talk to buyers of your old home into giving you that extra door back :)
Will you be able to paint your door any color you wish? Will there be strick C.C and R's as to what you can put in your yard or hanging on your wall ? I think a Charcoal Grey door would really blend with the colour of your home and tie in the grey roofing, it will be a subtle pop of colour, and will add all that French country cottage feel of Nordic French you love so and design around. I see tan shutters on the dormer window so could you add the same charcoal shutters on the window above your door on the second story and on the window of the brick wall? If so this would really add a lot of personal charm to your signature stamp, you place on your homes style.
If not take a leap of faith and do it anyways, I am sure the association will approve its beauty said and done.

    See you soon,
And all the beauty you will be creating.

    Xx
    Dore

  57. Oh so glad for your return to the blog and with good news to share. Congratulations on you new nest. I could picture what you planned for the new space as I scrolled through. So many projects for you and your project guy! You know the parable about knocking on doors that don't open...Terry's door just hasn't opened yet. But I am confident that you and Terry were not meant to travel far from your family and grands. I have missed seeing your posts and now look forward to following you as you make this new space your home. 65. Hi Kris,
So happy to hear that you are staying in Illinois! As someone who moved far away from friends and family for my husbands transfer(s), I can honestly tell you that the promotion and the money were not worth moving away from our home! But sometimes it takes moving away to realize that...and I am so glad that you realized it before moving. Friends and family are so important in life! Something will come Terry's way, and I totally understand that things are not the same as they used to be in the work world...it is all political in most places now, which is sad! I agree with Lisa about the inspector route, or what about an instructor at a school? I know he will find his dream job, and in the meantime you will be able to get settled into your beautiful new town home! I can't wait to see what you do, I love the layout already and anything you do will be beautiful!

  80. This is the first time I hear an HOA community that doesn't allow renters...I'm currently renting a town home condo. I had never owned a home but living in a town home condo community makes me realize that I will never want to buy a town home condo with any shared common wall (my only one common wall is paper thin and my neighbor of 5 with kids and dog are very noisy). May be it's just my landlord's town home community was poorly built and others are built with sound proved thick walls. But I am looking for free standing house with more yard space surrounding it to rent. I just am tired of hearing dog barking day and night, baby crying and young kids screaming and crashing their tricycle against my wall. But at least they don't cook stinky food and I am okay with smelling with the food they cook.

    1. I am sorry you have had such a poor living experience in a condo that you rent. These townhouse are owned and we talked to the sellers and they love the neighbors they have. With it being an end unit it is fairly quiet. Just glad the peeps next door to us are an older couple with no kids and will be good neighbors. I have always had free standing homes and loved the yard but now that we are retiring I am excited to be able to leave the town home and travel for long periods and not have to worry about the maintenance of a yard and up keep. So this will be an exciting change for us.

  81. These next couple of months will go by so quickly. You have so many great visions for your new home, and it'll be so fun to see how you transform this house into your very own home. I'm absolutely thrilled for you and Terry...especially to be able to settle near your daughters and grands...that's the icing on the cake!

  88. I am so excited that you found a house.

I pictured you as Joanna Gaines as you told me what you would do in each room. At least you won't be knocking down any walls. I know that Terry will do a great job to make this town house into Junk Chic Cottage.

  89. Your new home is too pretty. I really liked it a lot. Thanks for sharing these photos. We are also looking for such a luxurious home. Someone just told us to visit apartments in Dove mountain, Arizona as properties are quite affordable there.

  90. Dear Kris
It's wonderful news that you've found your new home.
These big decisions that affect our future life are hard ones to make - always there are pros and cons.
However, given the choice I would choose family before everything else too!
With both my children living away from New Zealand, it's not easy. Our daughter who has been in France for 16 years will be but coming home next year! Yea we will have our granddaughters on our doorstep!
    Hang in there Kris!
    Hugs
