This is Me This is not Me

As some of you may know that have been following my blog, one of my guest rooms was done in a lake theme this past year.  I live in a lake town and thought I should have my guest room reflect that.  I was happy with it until I tried to introduce Red into the room.

When I think of a lake house I think of colors like reds, whites, blues etc.  Brighter bolder colors.

A few weeks ago I showed you how I introduced some red to the scene.  I tried but just could not embrace it.  I am a white, cream very neutral girl.  My whole house is done in white, cream and chippy so this room just felt detached from the rest of the house.

I wanted my guests to feel like they could retreat to this room and be comfy and cozy during their stay.  The Lake theme just screamed "Hey throw on your bathing suit and let's go jump in the lake"!!!!  I just could not embrace that.

Soooooooooooo
I changed up the guest room .  Took everything down and out of the room and started from scratch.  I did not have to buy a thing (just paint)  and I used things I had stored or from other parts of the house to fill the room.

Here is my new guest room.  It is still a work in progress.   I still have a whole wall open for something down the road to hang there.

I am heading to Morris where all the cute shops are on Wednesday with my good friend.  I hope to find some things for the new guest room.

Now after reading all of this here goes...........

"THE NOT ME ROOM"

Here is the before.  Don't get me wrong,  I thought the room was really cute but it just did not flow with the rest of my house and I could not embrace the boldness of the red.  This vignette room would be so cute for a small cottage bedroom actually on the lake.  This room was Not Me!!

This is the "Me Room".  As I have said in the past posts this room is probably the hardest to get a picture in.  I would need a fancy camera and special lens to get the perfect shot.  So bear with me and just know the room with the sun streaming in is so pretty.

I added some cute cream and white pillows to the bed.  I re used my white ruffle bed spread and I had this tan and white checked duvet so I added that to the end of the bed.

This is the bike I had out in the garden that was painted blue.  My hubby painted it cream for me so I could move it indoors and add some whimsy to my guest room.

The inspiration for bringing the bike into the room was a few years back my hubby and I stayed in a B&B and each room came with bikes to ride.  It was so much fun so I recreated the memories of that trip.

Added a bouquet of flowers and a little bird with books to the basket.
Remember this bike I have in my the dining room !!!!
My philosophy is you can never have enough bikes or doors!!!! At least that is what I am telling my husband as he shakes his head every time I bring one into the house!!!

I added this cute little bike rental sign to my old vintage mail box in the room.

I also love this old "Room for Rent" sign I had.  I think it is cute for this guest bedroom.

I just moved the old vintage door with hangers over to the other wall.  Love the character the old door adds to the room.

These are the old shutters that I had turned the other way to make the headboard in the Lake theme.  I turned them around and they were more natural wood and chippy white.  I staggered them on each side of the window.

Here are the new "old" curtains.  I  bought these curtains at Feathered Nest in Morris.  They were too long and there was no valance.  So I got out my trusty sewing machine and made a rod pocket for the top of thecurtains and cut one panel down to make the valance.  Not to shabby for someone that only can sew a straight line!!!
I am looking for a cute side table.  For now I have the old painted counter stool.  I would like to find something unique for the side table.

I am not real happy with this door yet.  I love the old vintage mail box on the door but not sure about the old frame and door knob.  That could be changing.

I still have my dear angel hanging that the hubby got me for Christmas last year.  She is hanging on an old barn shutter.  Now my guests have a guardian angel to watch over them as they sleep.

There you have it.  The beginning of the new guest room.  Call me crazy but I just could not get into the red lake room.  Now I feel like this room flows with the rest of my house.  I love change so this room is a work in progress.  I do love the softer more relaxing palate in this room
Have a great week.  Thanks for stopping by.  I love all your sweet comments on my transformations.
Kris

I was thinking the red was a bold step. But I luv pops of red and was excited... hahahahaa.
I see now, this is more 'you' I luv it even more Kris. It is very soft and pretty. I am in luv with the staggered shutters, and the tan checked duvet.

  4. Oh my gosh Kris, we are sooooo much alike. I have been trying to "pop" a color in my white, tan and black color schemed home for months now and I can NOT figure it out. I'm now thinking a lighter (think hydrangea blue) would work better and be easier on the eyes than the RED that I love so much but can't make work. WHEW, that was a mouthful. I understand about rooms flowing together. Believe me, I UNDERSTAND, I LOVE your soft peaceful, restful, beautiful color schemed guest room! It is gorgeous and I agree that it looks more like you! I have to laugh at your obsession with doors and bikes... They look lovely!

Tranquil is the word I would use to describe your spare bedroom now.
    Oh, beautiful too.
You beat me on the re-do, I knew you would!!

  6. It's perfect! I totally understand you on the red. I admire it in other peoples homes, but I don't have a drop of it here. {Not even in clothing!!}

  14. Hi Kris,
Omg, I love it like this so much better and if you want to incorporate a color in just pick a very light sea blue. Great job! Stop by my blog for a visit, I would love you to follow me as well.

  15. Kris,
Met you a few weeks back at Vintage in Morris (I am dealer #37 with all the white things in the store). I, too, have an all white/cream home. I always say that my "pop" of color is just another shade of white. I see you plan to be in Morris on Wednesday. Try to give Cassie a call to see if she can have those angel wings available for you. I don't think she will be working tomorrow but if you leave a message at the store, she will be sure to get it. It was great meeting you and I hope you enjoy your trip to Morris. Lunch, of course, at Letty Mae.

  16. You are so funny, and I was proud of you making those curtains in buffalo check and now it's back to white. I love both looks but agree the second one screams "YOU". I love the idea of the shutters on each side of the bed. My bed is in front of a window like that and the headboard is always squishing the curtains. I may have to try an idea like you have.

  17. It looks absolutely wonderful, Kris. While I loved the Lake theme room it really wasn't YOU. You have that shabby, soft sweet cream colored decor that suits you well. I love it and the bike is a GREAT touch- xo Diana

  20. Well, I have to admit, I really love the red room! It just screams summer fun at the lake, but I agree, it really isn't you. The 'new' room looks much more cohesive with the rest of your home, and it's beautiful. I love, love the window treatment!

  22. Oh Kris you did it again!!!
I love the bike in the bedroom - so whimsical ( but how does one get into bed lol )
You're on your way girlfriend - I think your signature should be a photo of your bikes btw................
    XOXO

  23. Yes - this IS you - and it's beautiful!

  24. It looks beautiful, Kris, and is definitely more you. I am glad you went with your heart and changed it to what you love. It was definitely cute and cottagey with the red, but as you said, it didn't flow with the rest of the house to you and that is what matters. Love how you put the shutters flanking the window. Maybe you will find an old glass knob for your door.

  25. Love the guest room. I want to come and stay, as it looks so inviting. The bicycle and sign are icing on the cake. They add to the ambiance of the room. Thank you for sharing.

  32. I absolutely love it!!! The way you put the shutters at the window and with the bed is absolutely beautiful! I totally understand how you feel with your room not flowing with the rest of the house...I have felt the same with Hannah's room when I was trying to add a beachy feel. Took me a few tries, but now I've got it! I hope you find something that makes you smile today on your shopping trip. can't wait to see what it is!

  33. Your room is now filled with your style. As a lover of all things red, I did like the room with red accents, too. I'm doing just the opposite as you. After painting our dining room a white color, I'm trying to bring color back into the room! lol I love all your vintage pieces you've added to the room!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Kris, yes, this room is definitely YOU!! Even though I loved the other room, this one speaks more of your heartfelt, original style. LOVE it!! (Will this be my room when I come visit? ;)

  38. Love the room without the red. I think it looks so pulled together...romantic and chic. It's beautiful with the placement of the shutters...door...bicycle...mailbox and flowers.

  39. Oh Kris, this is so you. much better than the other lake room. It flows with the rest of the home and it does just scream KRIS!!! I love the bike and that sign you made. This room is so charming I just want to curl up and relax in there, MIND??? LOL!

  41. You OUTDID yourself. I of course loved the red and white checks, but they were way off the 'Kris spectrum'. This beautiful room is definitely you. Can I put in reservations for January? Of course, I am kidding about January. Who goes to Chicago in January?

    ReplyDelete
  42. The room is lovely, it's a great photo op and conversation piece.

I hope the accoutrements on the bicycle are well secured. I can see my clumsy self trying to put everything back as it was after I knocked it over and hoping nobody heard the commotion.

I liked the bench at the foot of the bed in the before photo, but with a plainer cover. guests need a place to put things sometimes or to sit on to put on their socks.

  43. Charm to the max! I'm embracing neutrals for a couple of years now, and though I see others including color again, I'm just not there yet. I love color, but for now, I'm also enjoying the look of light neutrals, layers, texture and vintage things. Your room is just lovely, and your "headboard" treatment is great!

  44. I too am a neutral girl so I understand completely how the color was not working for you or the rest of your house. While I did like the before, the after is stunning! I love the shutters on either side of the window. All your other details like the bike are fantastic!!!!

  51. What a beautiful bedroom you've created! There are so many wonderful details you've added, I don't know where to begin:) First off, I am in love with the bike, it's such a fun and unexpected surprise! The angel is so sweet, we all could use a guardian angel! And the door is wonderful, too! You could always paint the knob. Hobby Lobby also has some amazing knobs, too! And I am drooling over that gorgeous ruffled bedspread! It is oh so romantic! I would never want to leave this room, it is just so pretty and restful!!

  54. I love it! It does flow better and altho' I thought the lake room was adorable and I like red, you're right - it just didn't feel right. I did like the little chest better in blue. Staggering the shutters beside the window was such a brilliant idea! The whole room looks refreshed and new! I hope that you found something else to add to it during your excursion today! Hugs, Leena

  55. Well, that was fast! I am not a fan of red--it is not me either. Though I do like it in other people's house :) I love your style--much more me too. You make me want a white bike, though in my small house I have no idea where I would put it, but I do love it! Youhave such a beautiful collection of pillows. Inspires me to get sewing!

  57. I loved your lake room but this is gorgeous. I had to tell you red was my problem. I think I told you I was going to do my living room in like a beach cottage. I added a little red and now I hate it. I wish I could find my happy middle like you. Everything you touch is gorgeous! Wish me luck I just bought a blue denim sofa and chair. I wanted the white denim but right now not a good idea. Thanks again for always inspiring me!

  58. Like you I have tried to add brighter color and it just feels wrong. Every time I see a decorating show where they ambush someone with a big change to darker or brighter colors and the homeowner is acting all happy I KNOW they are secretly planning a trip to get paint the next day!

  62. Oh yes sweetie, this room is YOU! Love, love it! the first room is more like me. I love what you did with the neutrals. You have such a talent for it. I try, but just can't do it. I wanted this look for my craft room, but ended up throwing in mustard color. What's a color lover to do? I absolutely love the results! I will be featuring it at SYC.

  63. Sorry Kris, this comment is late coming....(with my Mom in hospital and all) I have to agree with you...the "red" was very cute but NOT you!! I personally love your cream and white look the best. To me, it is soooo soothing and soft!! I don't get it when people say white is too stark!(maybe if the room is too big?) I think it's perfect. The chippy shutters set it off....so pretty! Some people put Christmas trees in every room...maybe you can put a bicycle in every room! Blessings~~~Roxie
