UPDATE:  My blogger friend Lynn from the vintage nest suggested I maybe layer an old window or shutter in my design above the entertainment cabinet.  I stopped staring at the space and went out to the shed and found this old window.  No shutters but this old chippy window  and old chippy post was found too. What do you think?  Thanks Lynn for the idea.

I am not sure why but I just am stuck on what to do on top of this entertainment unit.  Did you ever have a space that you just can't seem to get it right.   I guess I will keep playing with it and hopefully will get to what I want.

I like the old chippy window with the chippy birdhouses.
So what do you think?  Should the window stay or go???

  1. I like the window, Kris. Yes, I have this same issue with the area above my kitchen cabinets. I solved the one side by putting tureens up on top. One more and that side will be done. The other is the larger side {L shaped}. I look at it all the time because I'm not happy with it. One day, I'll get it right!

    1. Hi Kathy,
I know it drives me crazy when I can't seem to get it right the first time. So I understand your pain with above your cabinets!!!! I hope like you to get this right some day. In the meantime I'll just keep looking at it to see if I can get it right!

    1. Thanks Anne. I am just driving myself crazy with that entertainment center. I just can't seem to be happy with it yet. Not sure about the post yet. I do like the window behind the birdhouses. Like I told Leena the drama continues with the decorating of the entertainment center!!!!! Hope you are doing well.

  3. Stay! I think that the window should stay! It really gives a great backdrop to your birdhouses but doesn't clutter the space at all. I like it! Hugs, Leena

  5. I like the window.. I say stay Kris. It makes a great foil for the birdhouses. I luv the chippy post!! Want!! :-)
My bane of discontent is above my kitchen cabinets. I do not like the 'clutter' of little things, so I have large pieces up there. I have vaulted ceilings. But I am so bored with the display and I cannot come up with anything I like better. That is my chore for tomorrow. Wish me luck!

  6. I think the window looks great there. I have some areas that I'm having problems with too and it seems that more I try to get it right...the less I like it.

  7. I love the window added! Have you thought about putting the swag under your chalkboard and raising it up a little? Maybe add a pretty scroll above the chalkboard to kind of round it off from the straight lines from the birdhouse, window and chalkboard frame? I think it is pretty as is, but I know how it feels to just not get that "just right" feeling with something. It eats away at you doesn't it. Sometimes it takes me a week to get it right..I have an "Ah Ha" moment, lol. You have an amazing talent at grouping, not many can truly do it!

  9. yay.....it looks great Kris!!!!! The top of our china closet has been a thorn in my side forever and all of sudden, right after Christmas, I had an aha moment. I did some rearranging with the things I had put away for Christmas. Why I never thought of it before, I'll never know but I love the look now. Your aha moment will hit soon. xoxox

  10. I like the window and the height it gives. It all looks so pretty.

I passed up multiple sets of old windows on 3 different occasions in the years before blogging, Oh how I wish I would get the opportunity again.

  11. Hi Kris,
Honestly, I liked the last way you had it last, because the chalk board and swag were like the focal point I think the new pieces are too tall and fighting for the attention.
Altho I like them and they are nice pieces. I was looking for the last pic and guess you took it off, cause wanted to compare them again to make sure, but know I really liked the
last one where you had just added the swag.

Have a great day. How is your back??

Blessings for a Happy Valentines Day,
    Nellie

  12. I like the window. I also like how you can 'shop' in your garage! It seems to me that everytime you get a great idea, someone goes out to the garage and oila, there is it is! That is kind of funny to me this morning. :)
    *Smiles*
Hoping your back is healing well.

  14. I like the window and the post. And who says it has to stay forever? Love it awhile until you want to change it. By the way I just found your blog thru Pintrest and I love your home!

  15. Love the window! I saw this bird nest that might look great in front to the right of the birdhouse where you have the post. It would bring the color down to the top of the entertainment center and tie in the floral colors above the chalkboard sign.

  16. I think it all looks wonderful, but I know how that is, it just doesn't seem right and you keep trying! I do like the addition of the window, that side looks great with it, and of course I love the post...where do I get a shed like yours? How about a long chippy box in the middle under the chalkboard...maybe a chippy metal scroll on it, or a door plate and knob centered on the box. You could fill the box with greens and a bird nest, or in the spring little plants like crocus or hyacinth... I know what you're feeling, I've got a whole living room I just can't get right!!! The last home and townhome we were in my furniture fit right in and looked great but with this layout, I just cannot get it right. so needless to say most of my walls are still bare because until I can get the furniture placed I just can't get myself to hang everything...it's only been 7 months since we moved in! How's the therapy going? Take care and take it easy on yourself!!
    Hugs,
    Pendra

  17. Wow, you find some great stuff in that shed of yours, Kris! :)
It's so frustrating when you just can't get something right, isn't it? Sometimes I have to play around awhile...I do love the window and the pillar, though! I think they add a nice touch.
    Happy Valentine's Day!

  18. I like the window and love the old post. It looks great. You'll find the perfect little something to make it what you want. You do great work. Happy Valentine's Day. Hope you have a great week-end. Sheila

  19. It looks lovely. The reason you don't really like it though is because the chalkboard is "floating" in the middle above your cabinet, and the other things are off to the sides, but "grounded" firmly on the cabinet. It's the open space under the chalkboard that's putting it off-balance. You need something low sitting in the middle of your cabinet, or off to the side, but in front of the chalkboard giving a layered look that doesn't block the view of it.

If you move the two small birdhouses to the left about 6 inches, so the small one is kind of blocking the view of the frame of the chalk board, have one of the little birds under the frame, and add a small white bowl to the left of the bird under the frame, I think you'll be much happier with how it looks. It will give the frame of your chalkboard a "foundation" to "rest" on.
